In daily life, Monique Moreira intuitively collects materials – contemporary or not – that make up the basics of our Consumer Society. She extracts from these varied supports the elements that strike her the most by reproducing them in her paintings.
Beyond the scale and even at times the colors which she modifies, the artist intervenes more or less on her « sources ». The flat paintings don’t allow for any personal expression. The painting represents only an object reproduced in oil paint such as it exists, for example : a fragment of a shower curtain with a repetitive pattern, a leftover on which one can read Satisfied or Reimbursed Twice or even a box of bouillon cubes in which the sides become those of the painting itself.
Occasionally, she adds a few touches, here and there: in her repetitive pattern called “The Poste Office” she associates doves, which in turn create a diptyque.
To her, paintings propose a departure point for a discussion on Language.
